Use the following to guide to aid in the installation of your new DSL line.

before you begin

Take a moment to make sure you are prepared to install your DSL service.

verify that you have Ethernet available on your computer

Our DSL kits require that you have an Ethernet jack available on your computer. If you either do not have one or are unsure, do not continue with the installation.

If you are unsure whether you have Ethernet on your computer, call the support number. It is likely you will need to have an Ethernet adapter installed on your computer before you install your DSL service.

kit contents

Check that you have all of the kit contents. The kit contains the following items:

  • 5 DSL blockers (including wall-mount blocker)
  • Y-Adapter
  • DSL Modem
  • Ethernet cord
  • Phone cord
  • Power cord

You should already have received the IP address information necessary for installation. Please contact the support number if you have not received this information.

step 1 - prepare the home

Install a DSL blocker on every phone outlet that is in use except for the outlet used by the DSL modem.

Unplug phone or devices that do not have DSL blockers installed.

DSL blockers protect the performance of both your DSL service and your phones. Without DSL blockers, phone calls may be subject to annoying static and DSL service may be disrupted.

For this reason, it is important to make sure you have remembered to install a blocker on every phone outlet in use in your home.

This includes outlets used by:

  • Fax machines
  • Answering machines
  • Dial-up modems
  • Cable or pay-per-view services
  • Telephony Devices for the Deaf

Outlets that are not in use should not have DSL blcokers installed.

Special Cases

  • Multiple devices on an outlet
  • Second phone lines
  • Two-line phones
  • Monitoring services and intercoms

Multiple devices on an outlet

If you have an outlet shared by two or more devices (such as a phone and Caller ID box), only install one blocker on this outlet. Unplug everything from the outlet and plug in the blocker. Reconnect the devices to the blocker.

Second Phone Lines

You do not need to install DSL blockers on the outlets used for a second phone line. However, if you experience noise on your second line after installing your DSL, you may wish to install DSL blockers on those outlets.

Two-line phones

If you have a two-line phone, you need a two-line DSL blocker. If you get no service on your second line when you've installed a DSL blocker, you will need to purchase a two-line blocker.

Home monitoring services and intercoms

You may need additional help if you have any of these services or devices:

  • Intercom system
  • Home security monitoring service
  • Medical monitoring service

If one of these is hard-wired to your phone line, you cannot install a DSL blocker because there is no outlet between the device and the phone line. You will need a technician to come to your home to install a splitter. Please contact the support number for assistance.

If the device is not hard-wired, you may continue installation. However, be sure to notify your monitoring service before installing a blocker on the device. Once the installation is complete, verify that your service is still functioning by asking the monitoring service to test your line.

step 2 - connect the modem

It is assumed that your computer already has an Ethernet card installed in it. If you do not have an Ethernet jack on your computer, you must have one installed before continuing. It is recommended that you contact a local computer store to have an Ethernet card installed.

You may connect the DSL modem to any working phone outlet. The DSL modem must be connected to the phone number you supplied when you ordered your DSL service.

The outlet used for your existing dial-up Internet sercice is typically the best choice, since it is known to work and is already close to your computer.

Do not plug the DSL modem into a DSL blocker.

Use the Y-adapter to share the outlet with a phone or dial-up modem. A blocker must be installed on the side of the Y-adapter not connected to the DSL modem.

After applying power to the DSL modem, the lights on the front panel will activate. A regular green flash on the DSL light indicates that it is connecting to the network. Allow the DSL modem up to five minutes to connect to the network. A solid green DSL light signifies a working connection to the network.

Problem Situations

  • You cannot connect the DSL modem
  • The DSL light on the modem does not turn solid green

Cannot connect the DSL modem

Make sure you are using the proper cable to connect to the compute rand the phone outlet.

  • The phone cord connects to the DSL jack on the modem to the phone outlet.
  • The Ethernet cord connects to the Ethernet jack on the modem to the Ethernet jack on the the computer.

If you are trying to connect the DSL modem to a device other than your computer, such as an Ethernet hub, first complete your installation as directed by the instructions then connect other devices to the service.

DSL light does not turn green

Make sure the DSL modem is not plugged into a DSL blocker.

It is possible that your house was previously wired for DSL. If you have an outlet labeled "DSL", connected the DSL modem directly to that outlet. The DSL modem will only work when attached to that outlet.

If the DSL light still does not turn solid green, call the support number for assistance.

step 3 - computer setup

To complete this setup section, follow the instructions (according to operating system) on our main DSL setup page.
